DIY to create the future life
Important inventions often come from innovative ideas, flashes of inspiration, or potential needs in daily life. Such sources of inventions need to undergo many design and technology challenges as well as breakthroughs in order to help enhance the quality of life and even change lifestyles considerably.
Thanks to the rapidly advancing information science and technology, many experiments and tests relying on enormous resources in the past can be easily implemented now because of increasingly prevalent open-source hardware with related components and parts. Therefore, everyone with basic computational thinking skills will be able to help improve the quality of life, and this is a trend of education reform around the world and a focus of the K-12 education system in Taiwan.
In order to help expedite more comprehensive K-12 education reform, Intel Taiwan commenced its program for cultivation of teenagers for innovative app development this year to support the Ministry of Education’s program of information science education taking roots at senior high and vocational senior high schools. The Intel program provides academic and industry professional resources to existing government resources, stimulating senior high and vocational senior high school students’ potential for innovative app development by DIY to realize their creativity.
Cooperation with the Ministry of Education for information science education to take roots and cultivate teenagers for innovative app development
The Ministry of Education’s program of information science education taking roots at senior high and vocational senior high schools is intended to encourage universities to provide basic information science courses to such schools, so that their students will be able to better understand the information technology industry and have an opportunity to start their information science study much earlier.
The Intel program in Taiwan, on the other hand, is based on the cooperation between universities and senior high and vocational senior high schools to provide its relevant facilities, resources, and experience in real world practices, developing synergy from the cooperation between academia, businesses, and government organizations to enrich the learning environment for senior high and vocational senior high schools.
Implementation of the Intel program has started at National Taiwan Normal University and National Taipei University of Technology. The professor teams at the two schools respectively develop maker courses that suit the senior high school and vocational senior high school students they are responsible for, and use the laptops, RealSense Camera, Genuino Development Board, as well as relevant modules and tools provided by the Intel Young Maker Box to guide their students to explore the development of information science and technology and strengthen their key competencies such as computational thinking, DIY, and problem-solving skills.
Midterm exchange event for creativity brainstorming and experience sharing in order to yield twice the result with half the effort
Since the Intel program for cultivation of teenagers for innovative app development started in October, the trend of information science and technology development has been systematically introduced to senior high school and vocational senior high school students for them to better understand available hardware and software resources and exercise hands-on practice. Students have also been encouraged to observe the issues facing them in daily life to explore the potential needs related to how to resolve such issues and to think of different possibilities of improving the quality of life with information technology. Moreover, specific subjects have been designed for different teams of students for them to together make the concepts of such subjects really happen.
In the evening on December 12, a midterm exchange event of the Intel program took place on a branch campus of National Taiwan Normal University, inviting Intel project managers and senior engineers for exchange and sharing with the professor teams of National Taiwan Normal University and National Taipei University of Technology. More than sixty people took part in this exciting event, where the students from the Taipei First Girls High School, Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School, Affiliated Senior High School of National Taiwan Normal University, Taipei Municipal Zhong Shan Girls High School, Yanping High School, Taipei Municipal Daan Vocational High School, etc. reported their innovative app ideas as well as the progress they had made. Their innovative apps include a smart aquarium, magical shoes, a sensor and real-time notification system addressing old people fainting resulting from tripping, etc., which are all creative enough and have great potential for further development. The students also benefited significantly from the realistic recommendations provided by the professors and other guests present at the event. The Intel program for cultivation of teenagers for innovative app development, which has various resources effectively integrated, is expected to enlighten and inspire senior high students to enable the cultivation of talents for innovative app development to yield twice the result with half the effort.
