Super Girl Camp for female maker development
One of the major objectives of this year’s Super Girl Camp was to help senior high school girls develop a basic creative thinking mode that entry-level makers have. The camp enabled mutual encouragement and exchange among the girls to help them develop creative and inquiry-based learning abilities. Traditional science education has long been criticized for ignoring how females think. On the other hand, the maker education in Taiwan tends to focus more on community exchange and has developed a special cultural ambience that encourages the gathering of like-minded people for better mutual support, emphasizing more on creativity than business startups. Based on the aforementioned idea, the Super Girl Camp this year attempted to develop young females into makers and encourage community exchange. At i-Foundry of National Taipei University of Technology, forty-two senior high school girls from around Taiwan enjoyed the wonderful three-day maker program, exploring the latest 3D technologies and how technology creativity helps resolve the challenges in daily life.
The Super Girl Camp, organized together by Intel Taiwan, the Institute for Information Industry, and i-Foundry, began with enabling training conducted by female executives from Intel. The intensive training including professional presentation skills, project management, and marketing communications strategies shared the essence of the female executives’ work experience of more than twenty years to the girls within a short time for them to quickly understand the changes and trends brought in by technology advancements. After that, the girls experienced the fun of creative 3D pens. Using a theory similar to the structure of hot glue, organic plastics made from corn starch injected from 3D pens coagulated under normal temperature, so that the girls could use their imagination to freely paint whatever they wanted. Moreover, the stacking 3D printing technology demonstrated to them the unlimited possibilities of 3D printing.
On the second day, CAVEDU taught the girls how to become makers by combining APP Inventor with Intel Genuino 101 Development Board to help these tech rookies feel successful by designing simple graphical interfaces and programs quickly. They found the attractiveness of being tech makers because they can better stimulate good ideas to develop IoT-related solutions.
Unintimidated by the intensive training, the young girls remained highly curious and enthusiastic throughout the workshop, at which the thinking behind tabletop game UndoBox introduced by 3DPC and the room escape game let the girls immerse themselves in interactive gaming and enjoy winning the game by successful teamwork.
The girls were also divided into different teams for strangers to acquaint themselves with one another and present team learning results at the end of the three-day workshop. They explored and interpreted brainwaves of paralyzed people for paralyzed people to communicate themselves by virtualization, and they also developed artificial intelligence- and big data-based solutions to water-saving as well as possible traffic issues resulting from too many incoming contestants for the upcoming Universiade.
After the three-day workshop, the girls learnt how to effectively raise questions, solve problems, and develop creative and innovative thinking as a solid foundation for them to become outstanding female makers capable of creative and independent thinking in the future. The next Super Girl Camp is expected to witness even more interesting works demonstrated by young girls.
